ok, our bookshelves are in SERIOUS need of organization. i want pretty little book piles scattered (in an organized way) all over my rooms like you see in so many design mags/blogs, however, having little children who love putting their hands all over everything kind of precludes that kind of design motif for now. but i think i could do a lot better. recently the books have started overflowing their shelves, and although we have at least four other bookcases in the house besides the one pictured here, they seem to be all over and in a state of vast disarray. so, what do you think? move into a new place with built-in bookshelves? (i wish.) pull all the books off all the shelves and come up with some kind of organizational system? (i did used to work in a university library, for pete's sake), organize each case on its own? or just live with the chaos?
what would you do?

I have that same problem. I would probably put some of them that don't get read all that often in a box and put it a way and if you don't need them in a year or so get rid of them... Make a case for its usefulness.
cindy, thanks for the suggestion! my problem is that i love books so much i probably could never bare to throw any of them out. i want a big library, like an actual library in my dream house. some people have stamp collections, i collect books! :) (and music)
I LOVE your shelves, they look like all of mine! I keep putting little souvenirs and more books and film I need to get developed and loose change and cards people send to me on there. I think I will photograph mine and we can compare. I think ours have "character"...that's the artistic term for the fact that we are a mess and we love books way too much!
yes, i want to see a photo of yours, please! i'm sure you have some great books- that'll give me some ideas of other ones i want to buy. i have a book-buying addiction. yes, we definitely have "character!"
